The Fleetwise telematics system has added real efficiency improvements to our delivery fleet by providing accurate feedback on individual vehicle performance, based on driver style. The information has proved invaluable in further developing our drivers into highly accomplished, fuel-efficient drivers, reducing our overall fuel consumption and helping to reduce costs.
Jerzy Wroblewski, Operations Director, Nestlé Waters Poland

A simple, scalable and flexible solution to save fuel, reduce emissions, increase efficiency and extend the life of a vehicle

HFC were always upfront about what we could expect by using their system, which they made clear was dependant on how much time could be spared to train the drivers using the guidance it provided. For a telematic solution to succeed and have the impact that is possible there is an ultimate requirement for constant management back up, leadership and commitment from everybody involved. A telematics solution will give Nestlé the tools to analyze the driver behavior, and have a systematic way in training and monitoring the improvements.

Nestlé Waters Poland took out a trial at first covertly for 3 Months. From March 2008, the benchmark was to understand the current situation. The trial was soon stepped up to see data from other depots across Nestlé Waters. After seeing room for improvement in driver safety and efficiency, Nestlé Waters decided to further the project to install 2 full Depots, Gdansk and Warsaw. By December 2008, Nestlé Waters Poland had safety and efficiency data coming in from 60 delivery vehicles, and over 80 different drivers. Driver training based on the system's recommendations, began, and reports designed by Nestlé were put into the weekly driver de-briefing process.

Fleetwise ensures drivers who have an unsafe driver style are clearly identified.
Matt Johnson, The Hands Free Company

The initial trial resulted in a 5% improvement in fleet efficiency, largely through the identification of driver performance initiatives as part of an associated driver development programme. As a result of the success of the initial trial, a business case was formulated by Jerzy Wroblewski Operations Director, Nestlé Waters Poland, to roll the telematics solution out to 2 whole depots. Many other parts of Nestlé watched their driver's efficiency and fuel usage improving and averaged savings now well in excess of 5% providing an 18 month break even point for the system costs.

Poland reduces accident rate by over 50%

The Fleetwise driver performance safety and efficiency score will rank drivers overall by depot, and grading drivers across multiple sets of monitored data. This way, Fleetwise ensures drivers who make little progress are clearly identified, and trained in the appropriate area.

The telematics system provides detailed reports on driver and vehicle safety and efficiency

The Fleetwise system gives us the data we need to pinpoint efficiency issues quickly and accurately. Added to Nestlé's driver training program and the commitment from their drivers, the system has been an invaluable asset to Nestlé. Many other efficiency and safety products can be integrated with the Fleetwise system, and therefore the project continues to evolve.

Nestlé run just over 200 HGVs in the Poland and have over 300 drivers. By using a coded key, issued to each driver allows Nestlé to grade driver efficiency and safety independently from the vehicle.

Fleetwise showed us the difference between an inefficient truck and an inefficient driving style.
Jerzy Wroblewski, Operations Director, Nestlé Waters Poland

During the test period, one of things which made Fleetwise effective was the addition of driver ID. (individual coded keys issued to our drivers). This gave Nestlé driver reports rather than just vehicle economy data, The Fleetwise system showed Nestlé the difference between an inefficient truck and an inefficient driving style.

HFC provided one of the UK's most experienced driver trainers, to help Nestlé Waters PL understand fully the data and introduce a formal training program which is continually developed to suit the business. Nestlé's aim is to continually raise the bar, to improve year on year, therefore Nestlé designed an efficiency / safety based incentive scheme. The drivers were offered an incentive for efficient and safe driving practices. A breakthrough was getting buy-in from the drivers. As the numbers have been improving every quarter since January 2009, this shows their commitment to the program.

As well as showing improvement in all areas on paper, the driver's moral was improved and this still provides productive but healthy competition between them. Nestlé's drivers have risen to the challenge, and this is now having an effect on driver retention.

Nestlé takes very seriously their responsibility to the world as a whole particularly in terms of the environment. They are very conscious of our carbon footprint and constantly look to systems that could accurately monitor emissions and extend vehicle life. Nestlé constantly take steps to reduce CO2 in line with their current message.

In addition to the primary benefits to implementing a telematics solution, Nestlé Waters Poland can manage all legislative requirements with real time information about where assets are located and the safety of their employees.

Nestlé is now working with RTL, the Fleetwise solution provider to develop structured reporting which accommodates varying levels of management information, i.e. Managerial level to Supervisor level. Integration into complex back office systems are now available.

Summary

Nestlé were looking for a simple, but scalable and flexible solution. It had to bring safety to the forefront of everybody's minds, save fuel, reduce emissions, increase efficiency, as well as extend the life of the vehicle and raise driver standards.

Key Challenges

  • Measure driver performance in efficiency - fuel economy, idle time, optimum rev band, over revving, top gear usage and cruise.
  • Measure driver performance in safety – harsh breaking, service brake / engine brake ratio, engine rev without fuel, over speeding, out of gear coasting, and reversing data.

Solution

Commercial grade telematics box
  • A future proof, commercial grade telematics box that can easily be upgraded over the air. One of the only products that can produce actual CO2 journey profiling.

Key Benefits

  • In a recent review, at the European Road Transport Safety Council meeting, it was announced that along with over 1250 PLN fuel saving, their company road transport accident figure had dropped from 19 incidents to 9 over the same period. This is a testament to the constant hard work in de-briefing and training carried out by the Nestlé Waters delivery team in Poland.
